In April 2018, Junior League of Indianapolis (JLI) announced the award of trust fund grants to local nonprofit organizations that serve children with physical or developmental disabilities.
One of those grants went to Freewheelin’ Bikes, 3355 Central Ave., which received $4,255 to fund Earn-a-Bike, a 16-hour program that teaches bicycle maintenance and riding safety to young people ages 10 to 18. Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive their own bicycles, locks, and helmets.
In December 2018, Horizons at St. Richards Episcopal School, 33 East 33rd St., was a recipient of a JLI’s Community Assistance grant. Since 1996, Horizons has offered a range of educational and personal enrichment activities for low-income preK- to 8th-grade students as a way to close the summer learning gap.
In addition to its grant awards, JLI also donated $50,000 to The Patachou Foundation, 4923 N. College Ave, Suite 25, for a new community kitchen. Currently, the organization serves more than 31,500 healthy meals to more than 1,200 food-insecure children in Indianapolis.
