Commercial structures along the west side of Illinois Street between 38th and 39th streets received a facelift courtesy of a grant awarded to Mapleton-Fall Creek Development Corporation (MFCDC). Originally scheduled for completion in mid-2015, the project encountered the wettest July in history as well as an unforseen structural issue. “There was literally a $50,000 change order,” said MFCDC executive director Leigh Riley Evans. A structural beam that ran across several businesses needed shoring up. Business owners, MFCDC, philanthropic organizations, and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation filled the funding gap. “This is another example of partnerships we form to get things done,” Evans said. “We creatively came up with a solution.”
