Indianapolis Public Library Seeks to Memorialize Authors of Color

Interior walls of Central Library showing engraved names
The names of 81 people are engraved on the walls at Central Library.

The Indianapolis Public Library is asking the public for recommendations of diverse writers and thinkers to memorialize at Central Library. Through June 30, patrons may suggest names via ballot boxes at branches as well as online.

Currently, 81 names of renowned writers and thinkers are etched into the interior walls at Central Library, but only five women and no people of color are memorialized. IndyPL wants public libraries in the system to welcome and reflect the diverse public it served, and this project is an opportunity to shine a light on the literary contributions of people who have been omitted in the past.
