Indy Jazz Fest, September 13–22

With 14 different shows to choose from, the 20th annual Indy Jazz Fest celebrates America’s indigenous musical art form at venues all over town, including in Midtown. For example, Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles play Saturday night, Sept. 15, in Shortridge High School’s Caleb Mills Auditorium, 3401 N. Meridian St. This year’s festival theme, ‘The Big Beat,” honors legendary drummer and bandleader Art Blakey, who helped nurture young Indy legends such as trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and trombonist Slide Hampton. The event culminates Saturday, Sept. 22, in the Jazz Fest Block Party closing night celebration, with music inside and out at the Jazz Kitchen, 5377 N. College Ave., on the southeast corner of 54th Street and College Avenue. Complete schedule:
