Thanks to a Lilly Endowment Inc. Enhancing Opportunity grant, the Kheprw Institute (KI) has begun renovation of Midtown Indy’s Concord building, 3802 N. Illinois. According to the grant proposal, KI will rehab and acquire the building through a community land trust to insure local ownership of this historic commercial structure. In support of KI’s goal to build community capital, it launched a construction training program to provide young people of color with hands-on training in various construction skills. Managed by New Life Development Ministries, the first cohort of 10 community participants worked on the pre-construction phase of the building renovation. Nine of the ten participants completed the training and are now either employed and/or engaged in obtaining additional training. Anyone interested in joining the next cohort should complete an online form.
